48 hours in Lefkada

Blessed with some of the world's most famous beaches, Lefkada island combines electric-blue water, olive groves and cypress trees with untouched mountain villages and romantic sunstes. It has everything you need to spend the best summer of your life, even if you only have two days to go.

Day One

Check in at Pavezzo Country Retreat, which comprises a group of old renovated houses built on a hill slope at the edge of the village Katouna. Head to Kathisma, one of the most famous and beautiful beaches on the island. It is long and sandy and offers sky parachute, plenty of sun beds and umbrellas asc well as accommodation and dining options. It is located 15 km southeast of the main town, close to the village of Agios Nikitas. For more privacy, opt for Mylos beach, in the nearby village of Agios Nikitas. It is a large, unspoilt beach with crystal water and lacks any facilities. You can reach the beach on foot following the path from Agios Nikitas or take the boat. 

Lunch at Portoni, the family tavern in the picturesque Agios Nikitas pedestrian area, which serves delicious appetizers, traditional specialties as well as cooked meals. Try the octopus with pasta, and veal stew with onions (stifado). Fresh fish and meat are nicely cooked on the grill (Agios Nikitas, tel .: 26450 97120, from €12 per person).

Wander around the capital city of Lefkada. At the entrance of the city lies the medieval castle, built by the Venetians in the beginning of the 14th century. The castle was named after the chapel of Agia Mavra, which was in the same place. The city itself requires walking, and you will not have trouble finding your way around since you need to take only two main routes: Aggelos Sikelianos's coastal walkway and Wilhelm Dörpfeld pedestrian street, the Market, as the locals call it. Here you will not see mansions and large courtyards but low, simple, colorful homes, close to each other due to intense seismic activity of the island. The statues of three major literary writers born in Lefkada, Angelos Sikelianos, Aristotle Valaoritis and Lefkadius Hern are distinguished in the city. It is worth visiting the Archaeological museum, with finds from the excavations of Wilhelm Dörpfeld.

Dinner in Rachi. Hanging on the top of the mountain, the restaurant has a veranda that is the most sought after spot for incredible view of the Ionian Sea especially at sunset. Homemade flavors from the traditional wood oven, freshly cut vegetables from the garden, exquisite local meats accompanied by an excellent house wine (Exantheia, tel .: +3026450 99439, http://rachi.gr, from €15 per person).

Return to the city for a drink at Taratsa Open, which, apart from the magnificent rooftop view of the harbor, it also stands out for its very good cocktails. It plays fine music and hosts live performances and happenings (Dimitriou Golemi, Lefkada beach).
