48 hours in Ithaca

The mythical home of Homer’s Odysseus, is a low profile island in the Ionian Sea with tiny harbors, beautiful beaches, olive groves and picturesque villages. Ithaca is something special.

Day One

Head to Gidaki, one of the most beautiful beaches of Greece, with green waters and pebbles. It is located in the southern part of the island and besides the rich vegetation there are places where the steep white rocks create impressive formations. Opposite the beach, there is the small island of Ithaca, Attokos. Filiatro is the most populated beach, as it is relatively close to Vathy. Small pebbles, green water and many trees for shade. If you swim a bit further, you will discover small creeks and caves for more privacy.


Lunch at Mpatis, one of the best fish taverns on the island. It is located in Vathy by the say and you will enjoy fresh fish and seafood best accompanied by the house tsipouro (Vathy, tel .: +3026740 33010).

Wander around Vathy, the capital of Ithaca, located approximately in the center of the island, on a bay that forms a natural harbor, where the islet of Lazareto is found. Most parts of the city were destroyed by earthquakes in 1953 and rebuilt, but they preserved their traditional Ionian architecture. The houses are built amphitheatrically around the harbor, while most of them are colorful, two-storey, with ceramic roofs and narrow balconies. It is worth visiting the Archaeological Museum that houses finds from the Geometric to Roman period found in excavations throughout the island and the Nautical - Folkloric Museum of Ithaca, founded in 1997 hosting more than 1,500 exhibits.

At the Fiorentino Cafe Bar in Frikes village you will enjoy a full breakfast with excellent service and fine music. In the evening the music is a bit louder and the atmosphere remains cheerful until the early hours (tel .: +3026740 31037).

Dinner in Ageri, located in an idyllic scenery by the sea, in Frikes. The seasonal menu of chef Vasilis Pericharos includes Mediterranean dishes with some modern twists and turns. Make sure you try the traditional savoro (marinated fried fish), the spicy chicken and chicken kontosouvli (Frikes, tel .: +3026740 31465).

To Katoi tou Lala is located in Vathy and is one of the oldest bars on the island. Vinyl discs decorate the walls while you will dance until the morning enjoying rock and jazz music and the fruity cocktails (Vathy, tel .: +3026740 32655).
