48 hours in Karpathos

On the second largest island of Dodecanese you will come not as tourists but as explorers ready to be surprised by its untouched beauty, food, unique customs and proud locals.

Day One


10am
Check in to Althea, a cheerful family hotel, with apartments, bar and large terrace overlooking the bay of Ammoopi. The breakfast is excellent with traditional Karpathian pancakes with cinnamon and honey, loukoumades with nuts and cinnamon, manouli (Karpathean cheese) with tomatoes, kouloura (Karpathian rusks) and grapes, omelette with potatoes, zucchini, tomato and cheese (Ammoopi, tel.: +3022450 81152, http://altheakarpathos.gr).



Poseidon hotel is a small family hotel in Afiartis, close to surf spots and Damatria beach. Rooms are available in different types, from standard rooms to luxury suite, all with sea view and a balcony. The restaurant serves delicious dishes while every Friday evening, Greek wine tasting takes place on the hotel terrace (Afiartis, tel.: +3022450 91066, http://poseidon-karpathos.com). 



The Sound of the Sea is a small 4 star family owned apartment complex with a spa, fitness room, tennis court, playground, one children pool and one for adults. You will find studios, suites and maisonettes, all sea view (Pigadia, tel.: +3022450 29000, www.apis.gr).



11am
Head to Kyra Panagia, one of the most famous beaches of the island and very well organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, restaurants and accommodation. It has golden sand and crystal clear deep waters. Above the beach lies the small chapel of Panagia with its red dome. It is easily accessible from the village of Aperi and is 15 km north of Pigadia. Alternatively, you will continue further north, 22 km from the capital, to find the beautiful Apella beach with fine pebbles and rocks on both sides.

2pm.
Lunch in Small Paradise tavern which has been serving traditional food for more than 25 years. Local recipes by grandma Sophia and her daughter Irene together with Nikos’ daily catch will be a real treat (Lefkos, tel: +3022450 71184, www.sunset-hotel.gr, from €10 per person). 



5pm
Enjoy Greek coffee and homemade spoon sweets at Lyra & Friends. On the terrace of the cafe-bar by the sea you will be treated by Antonis who will prepare nice coffee and cocktails (Kato Lafkos, tel.: +306976489230).



7pm
Wander around Olympos village, one of the most beautiful villages of the Dodecanese. You will need to drive 50 minutes from here (or an hour from the capital) to reach the northernmost point of the island, in the village that seems to have stopped in time. Olympos looks like an open-air folklore museum with colorful houses, picturesque alleys, stone windmills, traditional ovens and old churches such as the 16th century Virgin Mary, Saint Onoufrios and Virgin Mary of Chrysovalantou. Here you will meet local women proudly wearing their traditional clothes and people who still speak the local dialect.



9pm
In a simple and cozy setting with garden and a grapevine, the open-air Anoixis tavern seems to have sprung up from past decades. The food is homemade and you will taste vine leaves stuffed with rice, local pasta and lamb with tomato sauce and potatoes (Diafani, tel .: +3022450 51226, from €10 per person).
